Or have I ? so quick update and then I promise more postings
Completed Steyning Tri for the first time at 1.12m felt awful slow on bike painfully slow run its a fast course but not for me
Then back into Arundel which was my first tri last year, good swim 8.20 fast bike and good run tired but kept pushing and came in at 1.22 which is 8 minutes faster than last year. Really happy about that over the bloody moon felt great and now i could push more on the run
The hardest part was getting on a plane 2 hours later and flying Lanzerote , which was nice.
Now onwards and upwards the big race is only a few weeks away July 17th July is the big day and the race seems such a massive leap from where I am at the moment.
So started well this week , quick run Tuesday night, and this morning cycled into work 23 miles 1.23 mins breakfast at my desk and then have think about cycling home tonight another 23 miles ,
then Swim club tonight , great !

Last night got out of the office into the gym with my spinning and swimming class ahead of me , got there early and under my new internal coaching system which is Dont be afraid of the running, I have installed in my brain the ” if you put trainers on you must run 5k” so I will then not be afraid of running 5K .
is that nuts ?
So on the running machine feeling funky managed a 5K in 32 minutes,
Off the running machine into my spinning class already looking tried and sweaty , onto the bike for a hour class , heavy gearing hills and speed work , 26k covered in the hour,
Off the bike into the pool felt tired but great, swim training class 1700 meters 45 minutes, in sets of 4 x 100m, 8x 100m etc
fell out of the pool into a jacket potato with cheese and beans , felt tired real tired but also felt a million dollars,
drunk 2x mixed bottle of lucazade /water had a chocolate milkshake on the way there total workout time 32min run, 60min cycle and 45 min swim 2 hours 28 minutes and feeling fine

Running that is …..
Well here is what I have been up to over the last week, since last Sundays ride
I was away with work this week again staying in my favorite hotel in Cambridge I went up monday night checked in it was just starting to snow, Great 120 miles away from home in the snow, woke up early the next day to a covering of snow which stayed on and off during the day. When I got back to the hotel I thought let’s go for a run -2 will not go the normal route along the riverbank as its dark , snowy so pounding the streets, long straight road out to where I have been before then no pavement (sidewalk) and turned round and run back. In sight of the hotel , still feeling good, ran around the one way system which I thought was shorter than it was. Finished up 6.4k 41 mins
happy with that.
Friday afternoon 5k in 32 min on running machine starting to feel like I can run.
nothing over the weekend unless you can count wine (bottles of) and take aways, I don’t really help myself do I ?
Monday morning out of bed at 6.10 in the pool at the gym by 6.30 800m 17.5 minutes, out onto running machine , 10 minutes, on to bike on race programme high gearing 2 miles,
off to work and felt wonderfulllllllllllllllllllllllll

Saturday morning , found some time in between packing boxes as we are moving after 12 years in the same house, do you I threw out 13 pairs of shoes trainers or boots that I didn’t need any more , The local charity shops to me are happier and happier each time they see me.
I will not take crap with me , sorry I should say I will try to not take too much crap with me
Saturday afternoon after meeting up with a painter at a job at one of the flats , i went for a little run which was nice , cold day but I am starting to get use to running 4-5 k without this needing a lie down and cold flannel on my head. 4.5k round the town and 32 mins which I will take no worries.

Sunday after to going to bed at 1am with champagne and red wine and a large baileys in me , I was up and on my bike for the Tuff Fitty first road ride of the year, pretty cool only a few of us , but we did 33 miles 2.02mins , not record-breaking but just damn good getting out on the road,
have I told you how much I like my bike ?
This week I am away for a couple of nights so no spinning tonight or swimming , but I have packed my kit and will go for a run from the hotel it’s where i normally stay so I know my way around, back in time for Tuff fitty swimming thursday night

Monday night well what else do you do on a monday night except jump on your turbo trainer, always enjoy it in short bursts, worked on a high cadence for 10 minutes, higher gear up to standing for a recovery period and back down again to high cadence , tried to work in zone 3 all the time to get use to racing pace. 35 Mins , which is better than nothing I hope
Tuesday
just the usual but with a twist , got in pool 800m head down on my own and bashed it out as they say, felt good starting to feel like 800m is not a long way which has got to be good. Then out through changing rooms into spinning class one hour 27k completed , knackered but love it, I really love Tuesdays
Had a couple of other guys Martin and Mitch who are doing first Tri’s in May in the class as well so they have their focus and aims as well which is great to train together.
Wednesday , nothing, Nada, bugger all, vegged out etc etc
Thursday Club Swimming drills 1 hour , always look forward always work at 100% and always feel like I am improving and also feel most weeks why am I not getting any better? My mate Martin has gone up a lane to a from our lane, the club has 3 lanes , lane 1 swimmers, lane 2 faster swimmers, lane 3 salmon , killer whales, sword fish etc, Martins in lane 2 , its a shame such an old friendship down the toilet because he got better than me .

SO after Fridays slow ,muddy crappy run at work , where 2.6k felt like a marathon , got up and run saturday morning , pushed 5K out in 32 minutes and felt a hell of a lot better, so in my mind I felt good.
The problem I have is I am starting to doubt this whole thing , I am getting fitter but I am questioning each time I swim , run ,cycle am I fitter , is this easier ? can I put this all together, each time I have raced something takes over you anyway but now moving up to longer distance of the standard race 800m or 1 mile swim into 40 k cycle and a 10 k run seems so far from being achievable ?
Sunday out on the bike for a quick cold ride on my own, over the southdowns not a long route but a hilly one the with a fast 17% downhill on the other side , round the back and home, 14.6 miles in 54 minutes, felt ok , really love cycling always like being on my bike, seemed to dip into feeling tired and then feeling ok, quite surprised in doing it in under and hour , I need to be able to add another 10 miles on here and then be fit enough to run 8 miles afterwards ?
and that feels a long way off

So thursdays nights podding up and down the lane at the tri club swim sessions,
I have never not done any of the lengths or not given 100% but I am getting pretty tired
everytime, not getting any faster I don’t think , Have I reached that plato where you put a lot of effort in
and you spend the time working hard , even though you know you must be getting better it feels like
you just plod along

Well 12.4 k in 1 hour 20 , Felt quite good and to stop and walk for 30 seconds 4 times , felt strong sometimes , gel after 5k but pretty tired towards the end , just dont understand how I am going to be able to do this after 1 mile swim , 40 k on the bike , seems to be getting closer and seems to be a million miles away,
This is so much about your head and heart , not your muscles
feel knackered , and frightened about the journey ahead but cant wait to do it finishing will feel fantastic

have hardly lifted my head of pillow feeling like crap and starting to worry about the races in MAY already
But I have a plan , I watched 2009 Ironman on television again for the 4th time
Went along to swimming last night and completed the 1 hour set and put everything into it I could and was totally bushwacked at the end , I don’t know what it is about the swim classes with the tri boys, but I really do put everything into them.
drills drills drills , corkscrew drills, leg drills, negative catch up look at me , we were changing after swimming last night and they were all talking about how hard the Arundel run is , including the great statement ” I think thats the hardest run on any of them “
